Course Description

1. Cultural Humility

You will learn about the principles of Cultural Humility, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and self-critique, recognizing power and privilege imbalances, and engaging in effective, respectful conversations. This section also includes an in-depth exploration of strategies to address and resolve potential conflicts or perceptions of disrespect, fostering deeper connections within the workplace.

2. Cultural Competency Conversations

Listening, Observing, Responding - In this interactive activity, you will practice your listening and responding skills in various workplace scenarios. You will learn how to identify key information and respond in a way that demonstrates understanding, respect, and cultural competence. You will practice cultural listening, paraphrasing for content and emotion using accessible language skills, asking respectful questions, suspending judgment to promote curiosity, and establishing conversation parameters that reflect multicultural competency.

3. Practicing Cultural Competency Conversations

You will have the opportunity to practice cultural competency conversations using scenarios that reflect cultural misunderstandings and assumptions experienced in various workplace settings. This section emphasizes applying skills to real-world situations to enhance understanding and effective communication across diverse groups.

4. Maintaining Unbiased Assessments and Conversations

This part concludes with a discussion on the importance of avoiding bias in meetings and conversations by using Cultural Competency Conversations. You will receive additional tips, reminders, and best practices to respond effectively when encountering cultural norms, behaviors, or requests that are unknown, unfamiliar, or challenging.
